NEW MEXICO STINGING INSECT PEST CONTROL

Insect Facts

⦁ New Mexico has a variety of insects that vary from a nuisance to dangerous
⦁ Some are just inconveniences and they annoy people by congregating around humans, but others frighten people or cause serious damage.
⦁ Many of these insects are known to taint food supply with disease while others consume and tunnel in wood, causing costly structural damage to homes.
⦁ Biting and stinging insects can inflict pain and are potentially dangerous to humans
⦁ While this category is broad, the most common species of biting and stinging pests include fire ants, mosquitoes, brown recluse spiders, bed bugs, and fleas.

What Kind of Insect Do I Have?

Because there are so many different types of bugs, it's hard to say if there are any shared characteristics.
⦁ Ants have six legs, segmented bodies, antennae, and are reddish-black to black.
⦁ Mosquitoes are tiny and they look delicate. They have two wings and long, slender proboscis, which is used for sucking blood from hosts.
⦁ Spiders have eight legs, uniquely arranged eyes, interesting patterns on their backs, and range in color (most commonly brown or black).
⦁ Bed bugs are about 1/4 inch long, brownish (red when engorged with blood) and flat.
⦁ Fleas are unable to be seen with the naked eye, brown-red, and have piercing-sucking mouthparts. They latch onto hosts, especially pets.

Where Do These Bugs Live?

⦁ Several biting and stinging insects, such as common house spiders, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and fleas, are easily found in places such as homes and businesses.
⦁ Harvester ants, imported fire ants, and brown recluse spiders are typically found closer to moisture and warmth to ensure survival, like southern areas of America.
⦁ Ant species build tunnel systems underground in yards and parks, as well as in rotten logs, the walls of buildings, and under sidewalks.
⦁ Mosquitoes congregate and breed around sources of standing water
⦁ Spiders construct intricate webs in secluded corners of basements and attics. Outside, they may live under rocks, logs, woodpiles, and collections of debris.
⦁ Bed bugs nest in mattress seams, headboards, and other secluded areas situated close to sleeping humans.
⦁ Fleas live much of their lives in the fur of their hosts.

STINGING INSECT PROBLEMS

How & Why Do Insects Get Into Homes?

Are biting and stinging known to enter homes or yards?

These are types of biting and stinging insects that get into yards and homes.
⦁ Ants create tunnels in yards and fields, and ants from colonies will migrate into homes and other heated areas at the first sign of cold weather.
⦁ Mosquitoes bite people/animals and feed on their blood, so human areas like yards are prone to mosquito problems.
⦁ Spiders, like ants, often infest homes to survive cold winter weather.
⦁ Bed bugs, like mosquitoes, need to be around humans in order to regularly feed.
⦁ Similarly, fleas live around available blood meals, hanging around cracks and crevices close to the ground waiting to latch onto pets.

Can Stinging Insects Cause Damage?

Do biting and stinging insect pests harm people or property?

Bed bugs and ants bite their host and leave red spots that are itchy. Fire ants inject venom, which results in a burning feeling in the bite site.
Mosquito bites also cause itchy red spots to appear on victims' skin and can also transfer diseases, as many types of mosquitos are carriers of West Nile virus.
⦁ Though spiders are not aggressive, they bite people when they feel threatened or trapped. Common house spiders leave behind red marks when they bite; however, all symptoms tend to dissipate in a few hours. Brown recluse spiders are much more dangerous, as their venom can destroy skin tissue and incite severe allergic reactions.
Fleas do not typically target humans and more commonly latch onto domestic animals, like dogs and cats. Extreme flea bite reactions result in symptoms like intense itchiness, hair loss, reddening skin, and secondary infections.
