DESCRIPTION

Cryptococcus is a fungal disease that is usually caused by inhalation of the fungus and is found in humans and adults.
The infection causes tumors in the lungs and can spread to the spine and brain causing meningoencephalitis
Most people exposed to the fungus will not experience any symptoms. The infection is very rare in people who are healthy, it is more commonly seen in people who have lower immune system such as people who have been diagnosed with HIV and AIDS

A prescription of antifungal medication will be prescribed for at least 6 months or longer.
Treatments of Cryptococcosis depends on how sever the infection is and where the infection is located in the body
Treatment for asymptomatic infections that were diagnosed through targeted screening or a mild to moderate pulmonary infection is most commonly fluconazole
For more severe cases of infection in the lungs, brain or spinal cord the initial treatment is amphotericin B along with flucytosine. After the initial treatment is complete fluconazole will be prescribed for an extended period of time to clear the infection
Treatments vary for different groups of people like children, pregnant women, persons with HIV or AIDS and people who live in resource limited areas.
Surgery is sometime needed to remove fungal growths
PREVENTION
The prevention of Cryptococcosis is difficult due to the fact that we breath in air from the environment constantly
Symptoms from Cryptococcosis can begin weeks after the initial infection which makes early detection difficult
