COLORADO TICK FEVER

DESCRIPTION

Colorado Tick Fever (CTF) also known as, mountain tick fever, American mountain tick fever and American tick fever, is a viral infections that is contracted by a bite from an infected tick.

LOCATION

CTF is found in mountains or highland regions in the western states in the US and western parts of Canada that have shrub cover, pines, and rocky areas.

CAUSE

CTF is caused by the bite from an infected tick. The most common tick to carry the infection is the Rocky Mountain wood tick.    

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of CTF are:
Appetite loss
Chills
Faint rash
Fatigue
Fever 
Muscle aches
Nausea
Skin tenderness
Sensitivity to light
Severe headache
Stomach pain 
Vomitions
Weakness

TREATMENT

Get medical attention from a doctor

PREVENTION

When outdoors avoid tick infested areas in the spring and summer
Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors 
 

HANDLING ANIMALS    

Animals that are most commonly know to carry CTF are small rodents such as squirrels, chipmunks, and mice.
 

OTHER FACTS

There are between 50 and 200 cases of CTF reported annually
Between 1980 and 1983 1438 cases were reported and 63 percent of those cases were reported in Colorado
